The tracks that make up this e.p were recorded at St John the Evangelist Church, Upper Denby, West Yorkshire on 7th October 2021. My long time friend and collaborator Joe Osborne had invited me to record a session with him with the aim of picking up the acoustic properties of the space. With this in mind I wrote a twelve minute composition that would move between four distinct sections or movements, with varying amounts of space and texture created through different techniques and playing styles.

Despite its size the church was a very comfortable space in which to play. It was a good balance of ‘forgiving’ reverb, clarity and response. Having captured three takes we were happy were good representations of the composition I was able to do a final take that was less restrained and focused on expression rather than technique. This was my favourite version of the track and the one included here.

We used the remaining time to record a number of experiments using single sound sources (melodica, tongue drum, and mbira) and long delays or loops that fed the ambient sound of the room back through an amplifier. These tracks were improvised and focused on playing with, and in response to, the feedback and naturally occurring harmonics in the room; an attempt to collaborate with the space. The two most listenable experiments make up the rest of the record.
