about

Chapter Five
Chellow Dean Bottom

The water was freezing, but, to his surprise, just a few feet deep, reaching up to his belly. The floor was covered in a thick slime that oozed up between his toes. As he waded towards the island, he nearly lost his footing. A family of moorhens dodged around him.

The voice grew louder as he made it to the island and, with the little strength he had, he clambered up on to the side. The effort made him light-headed but he found the strength to rise up and push through the trees and shrubs surrounding the edge. He emerged into a clearing. The voice faded away in an instant.

The island was barren aside from tens, maybe hundreds, of empty tortoise shells. His Grandma once told him that people had released a pair and they had bred. A tree stood in the middle with a strange head-height hole that looked like a screaming mouth. He approached the tree and put his hand inside. He grasped something warm and spongy. It was attached to the inside of the tree. As he squeezed, memories expanded like drops of ink in water.

A steady job in the mills … years working at the machines … the noise … being made redundant ... years lost to drink … a relationship falling apart … an argument / a fight ... an accident when out walking …

His daydream was shattered by loud screeching. Startled, he ripped his arm out of the tree. High up above him, a buzzard and a crow battled, diving at one another like fighter planes. He watched for a while, transfixed. It was impossible to tell who was on the attack, or who was winning. As he stared, he felt eyes upon him. A family watched him from the sides of the reservoir. They looked concerned. The mother began to make a phone call.

He walked back into the clearing and nestled into a pile of the empty tortoise shells. They were warm from the sun and he drifted off to sleep.
