about

Chapter Four
Chellow Dean Top

These woods had steeper slopes. Birds called to one another and in the distance were the same woozy sirens. Bluebells carpeted either side of the loose dirt path he stumbled down. Eventually, he came to a long set of stone steps with a handrail that gleamed like a razor blade in the sun. He descended.

At the bottom he came to a pair of reservoirs at different elevations. He walked across the path that separated the two. On the other side of the top lake, an elderly couple walked their dog. Below, a group of Asian lads sat at a bench chatting and sharing takeaway. A nervous looking man walked past listening to loud music and swearing to himself.

He took the path down to the lower reservoir. Ahead, he could hear swans or geese making a racket. As he neared, he realized it was a group of teenage girls mimicking them and laughing hysterically. Their dog chased off a family of moorhens. They quietened as he walked past. He came to an information board. It explained he was at Chellow Dene and, along with a map of the area with suggested walking routes, outlined the types of wildlife he might encounter.
Chellow Dene? Chellow Dean?

As a young boy he had come here with his Grandma … or mum? They threw bread for the swans and looked for tadpoles in the shallows. He had found a man in a dress lying face down in the pool. His mum had shouted at him angrily, before pulling him away and dragging him home in a hurry. The memory triggered a painful flash of guilt across his chest.

He could hear her voice now, calling. It was coming from a wooded island in the middle of the reservoir. He couldn’t make out the name, but it was her voice. He removed his shoes, socks and trousers and lowered himself into the reservoir.
