about

Chapter One
Heaton Wild Woods

His trance was broken by a ripple in the water.

The skin of green algae distorted, bubbled and fractured into small pieces. He looked up to see a deer drinking from the pond, just a few feet away. Behind it were another two: one smaller, one a similar size to the first.
Could they see him?

He moved to get up: swinging his legs back up onto the small bridge he had been sitting on and pushing himself up. His body ached. The deer bolted.

He looked around. The pond, the woods, the abandoned half-finished adventure playground. He’d been here before, but couldn’t place it. A luminous yellow butterfly flashed across the long grasses. The bright sun hurt his eyes.
He walked towards a gate with a sign that read JEAN’S POND.
Who’s Jean?

A sadness bloomed in his stomach and made him queasy. He steadied himself against a weathered information board. It told him he was in woodland owned by a private trust, funded by money from the National Lottery. A map offered a few different routes out. He took the straightest-looking one.
I’ll be all right once I’m out of here and in the open.

He descended down a long path into the flat plain at the bottom of the wooded valley and followed a stream. Birds chattered. In the distance, he could hear children screeching and the wailing of sirens, softened into an off-key melody by the wind.

He approached a big tree. A worn blue swing rope dangled from it like a used noose. At the base was a shallow pool held in rust-orange soil. He bent over it and caught his reflection.
So, I’m an old feller, he said to himself. How old? What life have I lived?

A woman’s voice called in the distance. He couldn’t make out the words.
Could it be his name?

He followed the sound up the other side of the valley. He hurried to the gated exit on to the main road, but as he passed through, the voice disappeared.
