Chapter Three
Sunny Brow Cave

The road was uneven, full of loose debris and potholes that had chipped the paintwork of the black Audi’s and BMWs that lined the adjoining streets. At the end he found Sunny Brow, marked by a hand-painted sign in medieval script A pack of cats started to circle him, some purring and others meowing expectantly. He bent down to stroke one of the friendlier types, but it darted off. The rest followed.

He followed a small muddy path behind the row of cottages. Bramble bushes engulfed the path at its narrowest points. Crisp packets and stained tissue paper dismally decorated the branches. At intervals, cracked canisters of nitrous oxide gas had been trod into the ground. The sunlight glinted off them like crystals.

He came to the end of the path. It opened on to a large field with long unkempt grass that waved in wind. He had a full view of the hills on the horizon in every direction - from the wind turbines near Queensbury, around to Baildon Moor. Nestled below that was the mill village of Saltaire and closer by, he could see the old Hallmark card factory and the Bell Vue girls’ school. He shivered.
Keep moving.

He followed a foot-worn path through the centre of the field, parting the long grasses like a river. His eye was caught by an out-of-place rock the size of a tree stump in the middle of the field. He walked over to it. Beside the rock was a square of worn, muddy carpet. He lifted it up to reveal a large burrow-like hole. Reached inside he could feel the tunnel widened out considerably after the entrance.
Slowly, he slid inside.

The tunnel was just a few feet long and opened into a small hollow, just big enough to turn his body around in. It stank of rotten earth and musty weeds. He curled up and lay still for a while.

He felt he’d hidden here before but as he tried to grasp the memory it squished through his fingers into an ill-feeling sludge. After ten minutes … or an hour … he snaked back out of the cave and emerged into the fading light of dusk. He carried on down the path into another, denser, woodland.
